Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members have attacked and killed dozens of students at the Federal Government College in Buni Yadi, a town in the Nigerian state of Yobe. Yobe state Police Commissioner Sanusi A Rufai confirmed that twenty-nine male students were killed and twenty-four structures including the administration block, student hostel and staff quarters were burnt down.

Boko Haram is a militant group known for attacking citizens, government targets, bombing churches, attacking schools and police stations, and kidnapping Western tourists. Former Boko Haram leader, Mohammed Yusuf stated before his death his belief that the fact of a spherical Earth is contrary to Islamic teaching and should be rejected, along with Darwinian evolution. He also stated his belief that the fact of rain originating from water evaporated by the sun should never be taught in schools.

A resident in the Buni Yadi area said he counted 39 lifeless bodies within the premises after the attack. “The attackers started the operation around 12:15 unpertubed until after 4 am, the students were slaughtered and fired with guns. I counted 39 corpses.” The assailants stormed the school premises in six Hilux pick up vans and motorcycles and separated only the male students before they opened fire on them. “It was too horrible because, some of the students were slaughtered, some were burnt inside the hostel.” Many school structures were burnt down along with the occupants. Three ambulances arrived at the school to convey the dead and injured. The school has now been closed down due to the attack.
