Atheist Alliance International strongly condemns violence in Afghanistan after Quran burning

Atheist Alliance International strongly condemns the violent protests in Afghanistan, which erupted after copies of the Quran were burnt in error at a US base. It has been reported that more than 30 people have died, including protesters and US troops.

Tanya Smith, President of Atheist Alliance International said "We oppose the burning of the Quran. Burning books - regardless of their content - is an affront to freedom of expression, and a particularly insensitive action in this case. The mistake was quickly acknowledged and apologised for, as it should have been. However, the response to the burning of the Quran has been far worse than the burning itself - real people have died and Afghanistan has been destabilised further. Those who protest violently and commit murder deserve far stronger condemnation than those who accidentally burn a book, no matter how sacred some people consider that book to be."

La Atheist Alliance Internacional condena enérgicamente la violencia en Afghanistán tras la quema del Corán.

La Atheist Alliance International condena enérgicamente las protestas violentas en Afghanistan que han surgido a raíz de la quema por error de algunas copias del Corán. Según se ha informado, más de 30 personas han muerto, incluidos manifestantes y militares estadounidenses.

Tanya Smith, Presidente de la Atheist Alliance International, dijo: "Estamos en contra de la quema del Corán. Quemar libros -independientemente de su contenido- es una afrenta a la libertad de expresión y un acto carente de sensibilidad en este caso. Este error fue inmediatamente admitido y se pidieron disculpas por él, como era de esperar. Sin embargo, la respuesta a la quema de ejemplares del Corán ha sido muchísimo peor que la propia quema de los libros -personas reales han muerto y Afghanistán se ha visto aún más desestabilizado. Aquellos que protestan con violencia y cometen asesinatos merecen mayor condena que quienes accidentalmente quemaron un libro, por muy sagrado que algunos consideren que es ese libro.
