Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) Rights Policy
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) Rights
Politically active conservative religious groups are particularly determined to enact into law religious dogmas that would deny equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons. There is no secular justification for treating GLBTs in a way different from the heterosexual population, so AAI opposes these attempts based on the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Same-sex marriage enhances lives and happiness just as it does for heterosexual couples. The only harm done is to religion's imagined right to dictate who shall be allowed to marry whom. AAI supports equal rights for all citizens regardless of sexual orientation. This includes, but is not limited to, the equal right to a civil marriage, with all the accompanying benefits and responsibilities; to fertility treatments and adoption; to openly identify one’s sexual orientation and serve in the military; against discrimination in employment and housing. We take no position on what the state chooses to call its civil marriage contracts (e.g., “marriage,” “civil union,” “domestic partnership,” etc.) so long as the same term is used equally for both straight and gay people. All existing laws that refer to “husband” and “wife” should be changed to replace those terms with “spouse,” and “man and woman” should be replaced by “couple.”
