In the 2018 December Editorial of Secular World, I described how the Northern Hemisphere midwinter festival of Saturnalia was hijacked by early Christians, you can see it here.

At the time, few knew that the Earth was a sphere so the possibility of it being summer ‘down under’ hadn’t cropped up! Doesn’t that just show you that Christianity is mythical? The festive season is approaching once more and we love a family celebration as much as any believer, don’t we? So this issue of AAI Insider focuses on the Giving Season.

Giving Tuesday was started in 2012 to counter the spotlight that Black Friday and Cyber Monday put on human consumption and materialism. The idea behind it is to remind consumers that the holidays are not about personal acquisition but about giving.

That's why we started Atheist Lighthouse. Atheist Lighthouse is a listing of secular organizations around the world who are working hard to make the world a better place for atheists and believers alike. These groups work hard to promote critical thought and reason. Many of the organizations in our list are in areas of the world where asking too many questions can be dangerous and being an atheist can get you killed. In the face of such danger, they fight tirelessly for rational thought.

So, this holiday season, after you get your Black Friday deals and your Cyber Monday steals, make sure you round it out with a little giving. Join our event on Facebook

Exciting News from Nigeria

Our affiliate, the Atheist Society of Nigeria (ASN) has lodged an appeal against the decision of the High Court at Akwa Ibom to dismiss its claim that the government of Akwa Ibom state's funding and promotion of a huge Christian worship centre in the city of Uyo was unconstitutional and illegal.

The ASN Board has resolved to fight the case all the way to the Supreme Court of Nigeria if it turns out to be necessary. ASN believes that the constitution of the Federation requires separation of church and state, a principle that is widely abused in Nigeria.
