CAMPAIGNS FOR 2020
We have an exciting list of campaigns that have been approved for funding in 2020.
Our global initiative this year is a campaign for the Right to be Secular. Unbelievably, the right to be religious is enshrined in international law, but the right to be secular is not! We will use our weight as the only international atheist organization with UN Special Consultative status to agitate for this right.
In 2020, we are conducting two campaigns in Nigeria. We are continuing to fight the Governor of Akwa Ibom states for his unconstitutional funding and promotion of a Christian Worship Center. As expected, we lost the first round, but we are now appealing and will, if necessary, take this case to the Nigerian Supreme Court. Winning this will have repercussions across Nigeria, where unconstitutional government support for religion is rife.
We are also contributing to a safe house in Nigeria, where atheists from the Muslim majority in the north of the country will be able to live without fear of violence.
Our affiliate in Lebanon is getting our support to set up a conference with big-name atheists, including Lawrence Krauss, presenting by video link. There has never been an atheist conference in Lebanon, and we believe this will be hugely popular with the growing number of atheists in the country.
In Turkey, there is a huge number of refugees that have various problems in terms of seeking/finding a suitable home, roommate, or work. All these problems are multiplied in cases that the non-believing identity of refugees is discovered in today’s pro-Islamic Turkey. We will contribute to employing a full-time support worker who will help address this issue and help atheist refugees.
Christian symbols are always displayed in Greek courts. This practice affects the external impartiality of the courts and it is not one of a secular state. Our Greek affiliate will take that to the European Court of Human Rights and AAI will support their campaign.
