outdoor learning at Rukoki school

Hello ,

We have some excellent news for you this month, team members Bridget Gaudette, Rosi Guastella and Courtney Heard did a fantastic job of fundraising for Kasese school. Thanks to the generosity of you and others, the school will be building another classroom. We’ve been sponsoring this Humanist school in Uganda since the beginning and we’re very proud of how it has developed. Here is my interview with the Principle https://youtu.be/FX8-JPT-WeU

I was pleased to accept an invitation for an AAI representative to debate a Muslim for the Islamic Society of Manchester University - it counters the accusations that we are scared to engage Islam and only take on Christians! Report and video below.
And, in early March, our UN rep, Howard Burman, will be presenting our paper, Right to be Secular, to the 43rd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Howard will be reporting on this soon.

To tell us what you think or to share news from where you are, email me, Publications Director John Richards at secularworld@atheistalliance.org

president's message

This is my chance to give some richly deserved recognition to all those who are dedicated to our cause of working towards a secular world.

In particular, I'm enormously pleased with our new team members Bridget Guadette, Rosi Guastella and Courtney Heard who have revitalized our social media presence and already broken records growing our traffic and raising funds for Kasese school.

Also, please welcome our new Swedish member of the social media team, Per Glavå.

I need to announce that our AGM will be held on May 31st, 2020. All paid-up members can submit motions for the agenda. Affiliates can nominate persons for vacant Directorships before March 6th and individual members can nominate themselves (see below).

We still have vacant volunteer positions.  If you would like to volunteer, please review the available roles here.

Muslim debate

In December 2019, AAI received a request from the Islamic Society of Manchester University to debate one of their members. Your Editor accepted the challenge and it took place a few days ago. Bear in mind that this followed some horrific news items about two incidents of radicalized young Muslims attacking Londoners with knives and getting shot by the police.

Realizing that this could become a bad-natured encounter I started by making them laugh. I said, “Put your hands up if you believe in a god” (most hands went up) “Put your hands up if you don’t believe” (one hand went up) “Now put your hand up if you don’t believe but don’t want to put your hand up!” They laughed and the ice was broken. Then I put the title of the debate on screen, ‘Is life without god absurd?’, clicked to animate ‘Yes’ with the anvil effect and said, “Can I go home now?” More laughter. I felt I had made it clear that, while they might find what I was going to say challenging, I was not going to be threatening.

After the debate, while three very nice young men were driving me to my hotel, I was asked, “What was the best part of the event for you?” I felt confident enough in their respectful company to say, “Well, I guess it was not getting macheteed!”

AAI Launches New Bylaws
We are delighted to announce our new bylaws came into effect this month on February 3. With the growth we have achieved in individual members and affiliates over the past two years, the board decided the time is right to devolve key responsibilities for running AAI to affiliates and members.

The AAI Board retains responsibility for the day-to-day management of the organization but the structure of the Board has changed. Now, instead of a Board comprising 13 general-purpose members, six roles are reserved for Regional Directors, one for each region: Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, North America, and South/Central America. These Directors will represent, support and recruit affiliates in their region. The remaining seven members will comprise the Officers and general-purpose members.

There will now be a mandatory Annual General Meeting to which all paid-up members may submit agenda items. The first AGM under these Bylaws is set for May 2nd, this year. Individual members and affiliates will hear more in due course.

The way in which Board Members are elected has changed too. Now they will all be elected by affiliates.
These exciting changes will make AAI more responsive to affiliates and individual members worldwide and will fulfill our ambition to be a truly global organization.

If you are a lapsed individual member, you can gain full benefit of the new bylaws by re-joining.

The God Delusion now FREE in Arabic
Recognizing the difficulty many Muslims have accessing books on skepticism, atheism and evolution, Richard Dawkins is making his most popular titles available for FREE DOWNLOAD in Arabic, Urdu, Farsi, and Indonesian. The titles being made available include River Out of Eden, The Magic of Reality, The Blind Watchmaker, and The God Delusion.

The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason & Science, now a division of The Center for Inquiry, has launched The Translations Project to provide professional translations of Dawkins’ books into the languages most widely spoken by Muslims around the world.
