Hello ,

Welcome to the March edition of AAI Insider, the exclusive newsletter for AAI members and supporters. This time we feature our Spanish affiliate, Associacio per al’humanisme, update you on our initiatives in Uganda, welcome some new members to our team and finish with our usual thought-provoking blog posts, which you might like to show to some of your friendly neighborhood theists!

To tell us what you think, or to share news from where you are, email me, John Richards at aai.insider@atheistalliance.org.

THE GOD DELUSION FREE IN ARABIC
president's message
Recognizing the difficulty many Muslims have accessing books on skepticism, atheism and evolution, Richard Dawkins is making his most popular titles available for FREE DOWNLOAD in Arabic, Urdu, Farsi, and Indonesian. The titles being made available include River Out of Eden, The Magic of Reality, The Blind Watchmaker, and The God Delusion.

The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason & Science, now a division of The Center for Inquiry, has launched The Translations Project to provide professional translations of Dawkins’ books into the languages most widely spoken by Muslims around the world.

AAI believes that education is the way to bring rationality and skepticism to the world and we heartily applaud RDFRS for this initiative. It is obvious from our mailbox that huge numbers of Muslims are beginning to question Islam but are struggling to get educational materials in their own languages. As a measure of the demand that exists, it is estimated that 13 million copies of The God Delusion have already been downloaded in unofficial translations.

To see what is currently available and to download your own copies of these important books, head over to The Translations Project.

OUR SPANISH AFFILIATE
We warmly welcome Manel Salido (pictured) and his organization, Associacio per al'humanisme. Founded in 2016, it is located in Vall d'Albaida, Spain. The organization offers conferences, reading groups, meetups and information campaigns. It advocates for the dissemination of scientific literacy and secular humanism, which Manel defines as ‘the use of reason and critical and scientific thinking, without dogmas and beliefs that do not have a basis in evidence’.

Although atheism is on the rise in Spain, people are not as vocal about it as in other European countries, and so far, a widespread and active atheist community literally does not exist. ‘People just don’t care if you believe in a god or not here in Spain’, Manel told me.

But this is changing across Europe, ‘The advancement of humanistic thinking is shaking society. Associations like ours, that promote this vision of the world, are starting to change things.’

AAI ACTIVITY IN UGANDA

VIDEO WITH THE DIRECTOR OF KASESE SCHOOL

AAI has sponsored the Kasese Humanist School since it began in 2011. We’ve watched it grow from a small nursery and infant school through to the first years of secondary with three premises. Bambale Robert’s vision is to make it one of the best schools in Uganda. In this video, he talks to John Richards, AAI Publications Director. Here's the video!

NEW HUMANIST SCHOOL IN UGANDA

On February 4, 2019,  a new Humanist school opened in Uganda.  It is located in the southwest part of the country.   The school was started by Robert Magara with support and contributions by Brighter Brains Institute from the United States. Atheist Alliance International made a donation of $200 to complete the construction of the Christopher Hitchens Library.

HUMANIST ASSOCIATION for LEADERSHIP, EQUALITY and ACCOUNTABILITY
Kato Mukasa, a founding member of HALEA, an affiliate of AAI, recently appeared on Ugandan TV speaking about Human Rights. He stressed the value in respecting the rights of non-believers including the right to reject one’s religion.

HALEA is organizing a series of public meetups which will include presentations and discussion of a variety of religious and humanist topics. The meetups, which are sponsored by AAI, will be broadcast live to Facebook to encourage Ugandans from across the country to participate. The first meetup will take place on March 30 at a venue in Kampala—look out for more information on our blog and social media. Our Vice President, Bill Flavell, and your editor will both present at the event.
