The Gospel of “John”, within which we find this tale, is based upon a collection of manuscripts written by an anonymous author toward the end of the first century and later dishonestly attributed to John the Apostle. Debates grounded in pure speculation and supposition exist over the true identity of this alleged author, yet most historians and credible Christian scholars now agree that the Gospel of “John” was not authored by John the Apostle.
